This photograph was taken on the Haleakalā plateau on Maui, Hawaii.

The volcano's multiple craters are scattered across the large plateau, and most of the area is covered in grey, volcanic soil or sand and scattered rocks, bearing witness to past eruptions and making it look like one would image Moon or Mars.

While popular viewpoints can be accessed by car, only a longer hike will reveal the many details this unique landscape has to offer. Our route took as about 19 kilometers through the plateau, and only two or three times we met other small groups of hikers.

Even when shooting landscapes, I often try to include people in my photos to add perspective and interest. And especially in this case, the humans making their way through such a barren environment is what makes the image special to me.

The experience on Haleakala was unique, the landscape unlike anything I have seen before and the whole hike and the photographs I took one of the most memorable things of my life.
