An Empty Bazaar

A scene from the streets around Khan el-Khalili, Cairo's famed bazaar, which is frequented by tourists and locals alike. However, visiting in December 2012, the city was once again consumed by ongoing protests, this time against the then-government of Mohamed Morsi. During that time, the city was largely avoided by tourists, which for me made visiting that much more attractive.

Thus, as captured in the photograph, also the bazaar and surrounding areas were unusually quiet and empty, with only some locals frequenting the street in the background. Some shops are closed, of others the owners are sitting idly outside, having tea and chatting with friends or neighbors. The man walking down the street in the center of the image fits nicely into that theme, carrying a tablet with tea, milk and sugar to an unknown destination.

What stuck with me most on that day was the mood of quiet endurance, accept what you cannot change, despite the devastating economic impact the years of political turmoil must have had on the people working the bazaar.
