A Room Full of Prayers

A scene captured at the Chinese Buddhist Kuan Ti Temple in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Compared to my print "Spirituality", which was shot at the same temple and takes a much wider view, this image focuses on a single detail, the incense being burned in one of the backrooms of the temple, and the rising smoke dramatically lit by sunlight entering the room through a window below the roof. But also beyond the main subject there are interesting details to be discovered, among them the windows decorated with tassels and an otherwise rather bleak wall with tiles more functional than decorative, and exposed pipes of electrical installations.

On a allegorical level, the rising smoke represents the prayers of those who offered the incense, thus feeling the room with people's dreams, aspirations and wishes.

That symbolism, the visually striking subject and also the background details make this one of my favorite photographs from my time in South East Asia.
