For most of my life, the sea was not really of big interest to me and I never understood the longing many others feel for it. Even having lived in Thailand for five years, I made it to the seaside there maybe once or twice a year, more drawn by the seafood than anything else.

However, visiting a friend on the island of Maui in Hawaii in 2015 changed all that. Once there, the often lonely, picturesque beaches, the mild temperatures, clear water and otherwise rocky and striking shoreline won me over in no time. While there, I could not get enough of spending time at the water, appreciating its beauty, emerging my body into the salty wetness during morning swims, and of course capturing everything with my camera.

So, now I understand, and images like this one make me long for the smell, taste and feel of the big oceans.
